Curriculum Access for Students with Vision Impairments


Vision allows an individual to gather information quickly, incidentally, holistically, and at a distance in order to integrate this information with the other senses to understand the world. Limitations in visual access to the environment results in unique educational and developmental needs for students with vision impairments.

Consultation, collaboration and teamwork between the class or subject teacher, visiting (itinerant) teacher, parent and student is essential in order to provide students with vision impairments optimum access to the school curriculum.

Teaching strategies and environmental adaptions for individual students can vary depending on the cause and degree of their vision impairment. It is important to consider issues related to the student's learning environment such as:
